Why circle crop for profile pictures?

Nearly every major social platform โ€” LinkedIn, Twitter/X, GitHub, Discord, YouTube, Slack, and Instagram โ€” displays profile photos in a circular frame. When you upload a square image, the platform crops it to a circle automatically, but the cropping is centered and may cut off your subject in unexpected ways.

Pre-cropping your image to a circle lets you control exactly what shows through the circular frame. You can adjust the composition before uploading, ensuring your face or logo is perfectly centered. The transparent PNG background means the circle edge looks sharp on any background color.

This tool uses the browser's Canvas API to apply a circular clip path to your image, then exports it as a PNG with an alpha channel. The result is a perfectly circular image you can use anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the output always PNG and not JPG?

JPG does not support transparency. A circle crop requires the areas outside the circle to be transparent โ€” only PNG (and WebP) can represent this. If you save it as JPG, the background becomes solid white or black, destroying the circular shape.

How do I center the subject of my photo in the circle?

This tool crops from the center of the image. For best results, make sure your subject is centered in the original photo. If not, crop or resize the photo first using the image resizer, then use the circle crop tool.

What size should I choose for LinkedIn?

LinkedIn recommends 400ร—400 pixels for profile photos. Select "400 ร— 400 px" in the output size dropdown for the best result.

Are my images private?

Yes โ€” all processing uses the Canvas API in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
